Clay Network General Meeting on November 11, 2018 @ 2pm
Please join us for our next meeting on Sunday, November 11, 2018 @ 2pm. Our meeting will take place at Florida State College at Jacksonville South Campus (Beach Blvd). Michael Cottrell, Director of the Ceramics Department will lead the demonstration for this meeting. He will provide an overview of 3D printing and digital fabrication technologies as they relate to art, specifically ceramics. He will reveal how the technology is used to create ceramic forms and tools to achieve a specific form using handbuilding and slip casting techniques. Below is a pic of some examples. This should be a great meeting that gives us a glimpse of cutting edge technology.
We will also have our general meeting and potluck. Find us on FaceBook and Instagram, as well.

September 2018 Meeting at Wild Ginger Studio and Pottery
We had a great meeting at Wild Ginger Studio and Pottery in September 2018. Sandy Woolley owner/operator of the studio kindly provided the space and led the demonstration. Sandy showed how to create your own stains for adding to textured slabs. She provided a recipe and provided tips and tricks to achieve the best results.
Sandy's Demo
Surface texture with stains
*using washes/stains to texture slabs, they don't stick to kiln shelf
*make buttons from scrap clay and then with the cord (fishing line) can use as a cut off tool (made with 10 lb test)
*Use homemade mason wash (mason stain, flux, and water). The recipe is as follows: 1pt mason stain to 1 pt flux (gerstley borate or frit 3134) and 1 pt water, if going to cone 6. If firing to cone 10 (gerstley borate or frit 3195) and 3 pts water is needed
There are 2 ways to proceed:
- take a slab and maybe begin with the light colors as the background and the darker colors dry brushed after the lighter colors
- Be sure to have a plan for what you are going to make. Using the least amount as possible on brush and using a fan brush, paint the slab. Then, using the texture mat on top of the stain. This then will cause the texture to be actually white or of less color as they are spread out more. Moving in the same direction, basically dry brush the color on. On the second slab, textured first and then paint on the stain.
- Finally, use the press-n-go system to get a bowl or plate

Clay Network Bi-Monthly Meeting held on July 8, 2018 from 2pm-5pm
Our bi-monthly meeting was held on Sunday, July 8, 2018 from 2p-5p. Polly Beach, owner/operator of the Clay Times Art Center in Fernandina Beach graciously offered to host our meeting, as well as organize our member workshop.
Polly arranged for Herrick Smith to be the guest artist. Herrick is the ceramic tech for UNF and he demonstrated his technique for producing and assembling very large forms. He used his preferred, dug clay and utilized pre-made sections to show how he makes and joins the leather hard sections into completed forms. His finished, fired works were on exhibition at the Clay Times Center so that anyone interested was able support his art via purchase of his work. Herrick was a pleasure to watch and he demonstrated his techniques with skill and ease.
The Clay Times Art Center is a wonderful new addition to Northeast Florida. The center offers classes, studio space, a gallery, and a pottery supply store.
We have been invited back to hold one of our meetings there in the future and we look forward to our next adventure there.

Dana Drake of Om Pottery at March 11, 2018 meeting
Textured rollers and stencil making
(Clay Network Meeting 3/11/2018 hosted by Dana Drake of Om Pottery)
Dana suggested the following sites for more information regarding texture rollers and such:
www.etsy.com/shop/AlgisCrafts
www.vangilderpottery.com/online-store
She recommends VanGilder’s textured block set, as well as the sponges
www.joann.com/darice-foamies-foam-roll-36inx60in-white
(Clay Network Meeting 3/11/2018 hosted by Dana Drake of Om Pottery)
- choose various sizes of 1/2” smoothed edged boards in the size of the dish that you would like to make, eg: 3” X 6”
- on an 8.5 X 11 inch piece of paper, lay the board directly in the center and trace around the board
- now fold the piece of paper in half, and then half again
- the tracing of your board will be visible (a fourth of it)...you will then want to cut around the tracing of the board pattern to create a template (similar to making snowflake designs like we did when we were kids)
- open the template and see that you now have a template to lay on your slab to cut out that will then fit your pre-selected board (texture if first)
- roll texture onto your slab using textured roll pins (you can texture both sides)
- place your textured slab onto a piece of foam...PRESS down on to your textured slab with the board into the foam and VOILA! You just made a beautiful dish!
